Monitoring Council Standards

Are You An Independent Person?

Purbeck District Council is looking to appoint two people to be Independent Persons as part of its arrangements for maintaining high standards of behaviour by councillors and co-opted members.  If you have a broad range of experience, preferably in public, private, voluntary or charitable sector, are open-minded and non-judgemental then you could be one of the Independent Persons.

As one of the Independent Persons you will play a key role in helping to promote and maintain high standards of conduct by councillors and co-opted members of the Council and the Town and Parish Councils within Purbeck.  Following a complaint that a councillor and co-opted member may have broken the Councillors’ Code of Conduct one of the Independent Persons will be asked for their view before a decision is made whether to investigate the complaint.

The Councillor or co-opted member who is the subject of the complaint may also ask the other Independent Person for advice.

The role, which is not expected to be onerous will include an allowance of £230 per year under the Council’s allowances scheme.

More information including an application form is available on the Council’s website at
