Purbeck
residents have until 17 April to make sure they are on the electoral
register in order to vote at the May County Council elections.
Vanessa Ricketts, Democratic Services and Elections Manager at Purbeck District Council, said:
“Most people will have registered to vote last autumn but if you have
recently moved to, or within, the district you will need to register by
Wednesday 17 April.”
This can be done by contacting Purbeck District Council on 01929 557219 or by visiting www.aboutmyvote.co.uk and it is free of charge.
Vanessa
continued: “We are concerned to hear that some companies are offering a
paid-for register-to-vote service. The Electoral Commission has drawn
our attention to this and is taking action in relation to it.
“It
is very simple to register to vote and we don’t want people to
mistakenly use a service which charges, so just contact us or go online
at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk.”
People
who are going on holiday, or who will be unable to get to their polling
station on 2 May can also ensure they don’t miss out.
Vanessa
said: “There is still time to register to vote by post. Application
forms to do so can be obtained by calling 01929 557219. The deadline for
completed applications is 5pm on Wednesday 17 April 2013.
“It
is also possible to vote by proxy, where somebody will vote on your
behalf. 5pm on Wednesday 24 April is the deadline to register to vote
by proxy.”
Polling
Stations will be open on Thursday 2 May 2013 between 7am and 10pm and
the results of the elections will be announced after the count which
takes place that evening. The full Dorset County Council election
results will be available online at www.dorsetforyou.com/elections on Friday 3 May 2013.
