On
27 July 2012 the eyes of the world will be on the UK as the Olympic
flame arrives to signify the start of the London 2012 Games.
The
flame will make its journey from Greece arriving in the UK at Land’s
End on 18 May 2012, ready for the Olympic Torch Relay to begin the
following day.
Representing
peace, unity and friendship, the flame will start its 70-day historic
journey around the UK towards the Olympic Stadium carried by over 8,000
inspirational torchbearers who have been nominated by members of the
public.
Today
the London 2012 organisers (LOCOG) have announced details of over 1,000
cities, towns and villages throughout the UK that the Olympic flame
will be carried through.
The
Dorset 2012 Board is proud to confirm that on 12, 13 and 14 July 2012,
the Olympic flame will travel through Dorset en-route towards London.
The Olympic flame will be carried through the following Dorset

- Dorchester

- Portesham
- Chickerell
- Wyke Regis
- Osprey Quay, Portland
- Weymouth (arriving twelfth, staying overnight for a celebratory event)
13 July

Details of the route and timing will be announced nearer the start of the Torch Relay.

Campbell, Chairman of the Dorset Olympic Board, said “This is a great
opportunity for communities across Dorset to touch the spirit of the
games and showcase our remarkable county on the world stage”.
Howard
Legg, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Brief Holder for the
Olympics said “As the largest venue outside of London, it’s only right
that local people get the opportunity to be involved with this unique
event in the borough and today’s announcement about the Torch Relay is
fantastic news. It promises to be a grand occasion.”
Details
of the route between towns/villages/communities and timing will be
announced in 2012. In the meantime, to encourage the participation of
communities, the Dorset Olympic Board at its meeting on the 7 October
approved a proposal to organise a workshop for parishes/towns/community
groups along the route to advise and encourage their support for this
once-in-a-lifetime event. This workshop will be held before the end of
the year and representatives from across the county will be invited to
attend.
