The Bill Hogarth National Coppice Apprentice Scheme
To
ensure that rural skills such as coppicing are recognised and their
continuity is secured in Dorset, Dorset Wildlife Trust, Small Woodland
Association, National Trust and Dorset Coppice Group are providing an
opportunity for one person to become a coppice apprentice in Purbeck.
The apprenticeship programme is
a three year diploma which includes chainsaw training, learning a wide
range of woodland crafts such as hurdles, charcoal, rose arches, bespoke
chairs and conservation management. There will be supplementary
financial support in the form of a bursary for the apprenticeship.
The
apprentice will work alongside an established coppice businesses (Toby
Hoad from Greenwood Workshop and David Partridge from Dorset Hurdles)
and will be mentored by Dorset Wildlife Trust (Emma Tomlin Conservation
Officer Trees and Woodlands).
In the final year we will support the apprentice as they developed a new company by helping them to produce a business plan.
The
first step in applying for the National Coppice Apprenticeship Scheme
is to come on the Week in the Woods course which will provide
participants with a range of taster workshops in coppicing and green
wood crafts and will assess whether they are interested in pursuing a
career as a woodland worker. The course is accredited and is the entry
module for the full apprenticeship. The course will be held 24th -28th
September 2012 at a number of locations in Purbeck and will costs £120
(if you are on a low income please contact Fran on the number below).
