The Parish Council has grave reservations. Our response can be seen below.
Navitus Bay
Wind Farm
Concerns
1. Visual impact
The turbines will be highly visible along the
Hampshire / Dorset coast from the Isle of Wight to Portland . This will have an adverse
effect on the seascape with the loss of uninterrupted horizon over the sea.
2. Navigation
It will effect shipping navigating along the coast,
accessing Poole , and accessing the Solent . This will create unofficial shipping lanes
mixing large and small craft in the same area.
The Farm will create a radar shadow, which will mask
small craft to the radar on large craft, increasing the risk of collision.
3. Communications
The Farm could interfere with radio and television
signals.
4. Light Pollution
The introduction of lights on the Farm could have an
adverse effect on the night-time seascape off the coast of Dorset .
5. Economic Impact
It could have an adverse impact on tourism, reducing
the number of visitors to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
Alternatives
There
are many tidal races along the coast of Dorset , which could provide a
reliable source for the energy requirements of Dorset .
1. Tidal Flow Turbines situated
in the tidal races at Portland Bill and St Aldhems Head.
2. A stored water system
utilising the water in the Fleet
3. Portland has many disused quarries.
Surplus power could be used to pump water into a quarry and then this water
could be used to increase energy generation at periods of high demand.
Parish
Council View
The
council would not support a wind farm which would blight the Dorset Coast whilst tidal generation has
not been fully explored.
